Cultivating Creativity
You know that feeling when you sit down to write or create something and absolutely NOTHING comes up? That’s creativity in action.
And then you start just writing whatever and the energy starts to shift a little. That’s creativity in motion.
Ping-pong back and forth between these two stages for a while and you find your flow.
Once there, your project starts to take on a life of its own.
The flow state in this step is what we TYPICALLY think of as creativity. But it’s actually all of it, the blank space, the f*cking around feeling like you’re not creating anything, and THEN the flow state that is the entire process of creativity.
There are those moments when creativity seems to show up out of nowhere and your project comes flowing effortlessly out of your fingers. But if you create only in that state, then you’re left waiting for IT to show up to YOU. And if you know me, you know that’s a little too passive for me.
Here’s a little secret: almost all creative endeavors generally follow this process.
From creating a Facebook post, to a client, to a world-traversing, year-long coaching partnership (for me, The Giant’s 🌎 Odyssey), they all begin from this place: no-thing.
Here are 2 tips to increase your creative production:
1. Give creativity a place to show up to so you’re not leaving it to a chance encounter! Creativity might not be an on-demand experience for you right now, but if you tell it where to show up — and then YOU show up there day after day — creativity knows exactly where to find you.
2. It’s not as sexy as we think. Creativity, like success, isn’t actually all that sexy. It’s a by-product of doing the work and showing up and sitting out the resistance. If you’re willing to be the last man standing (aka: my business plan), you’ll find both creativity and success.
